Detroit rap-rocker Kid Rock got his start in the music industry by break-dancing and making the Michigan talent show rounds. Using the Beastie Boys as a primary influence, Kid Rock recorded his first demo in 1988 and later signed a contract with Atlantic Records. He hit his stride in 1998 with his popular album Devil Without a Cause which featured mega-hit singles “Bawitdaba” and “Cowboy.” The album went platinum seven times. In 2008, Kid Rock covered Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama,” renaming the single “All Summer Long,” and found himself atop the charts again with one of the most popular rock songs of the summer.

Rock legend group Lynyrd Skynyrd fuses hard rock with the power of blues to form a famous and definitive sound. Group leader Ronnie VanZant demonstrated a knack for lyrical detail and seamlessly combined country and rock sounds, guaranteeing the group’s lasting success from the 1970s through today. Although perishing in a plane crash in 1977, VanZant’s musical legacy was not lost and the group endured, becoming an extremely popular concert act in the 1980s, ‘90s and beyond. The group’s singles “Free Bird” and “Sweet Home Alabama” are timeless staples of rock music history.
